This blog post is a response to the requirement of four journal entries. Attending the National Book Festival back in September excited the ten-year-old Jade in me who loved anything to do with books.

On September 2, 2017, I had the pleasure of attending the 2017 National Book Festival at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. From the moment I entered the center, I was in complete admiration of my surroundings. Back home in New York City, I had never attended any festivals or conventions. They were held in my city but I typically wasn’t aware of them. I’ve always loved reading throughout my childhood. The ability to transport to another world in your mind captivated me and encouraged me to pursue my creative writing endeavors. I had decided to attend the festival because the author of the book-turned-movie, Everything, Everything, was there to give a presentation and sign books. I was unable to make it to her presentation but ultimately waited almost two hours for her to sign my copy of her novel. When it was finally my turn to speak to her, we had a brief chat about my pursuit to be a young adult author and my current struggle of writer’s block. Attending the festival was a remarkable event of many to occur during my collegiate years here at Howard University.
